Detailed notes along with sample discussion questions are in the overview document. This social research methods course is designed for fully online, short summer term with emphasis on discussions. This class may also be modified and adapted as face-to-face or regular semester online course.

Learning Goals and Assessments

Learning Goal(s):

  1. Demonstrate the understanding of social research methods and how methods relate to social life.
  2. Apply qualitative data analysis to examine social issues.
  3. Apply quantitative data analysis to examine social issues.

Goal Assessment(s):

  1. Students will discuss various aspects of social research and how they may relate to social life in written discussion boards (or in small and large groups).
  2. Students will use content analysis (open and axial coding) on qualitative data from real social research and summarize the findings in a paper.
  3. Students will use basic statistics (univariate, bivariate, and regression analysis) on quantitative data from real social research and summarize the findings in a paper.
