Learning Goals and Assessments

Learning Goal(s):

  1. Describe how sociologists study masculinity.
  2. Explain how culture and social structure enable and constrain masculine practices.
  3. Explain how masculinity operates across the life course and in different social institutions.
  4. Use theory on masculinities to analyze primary sources.

Goal Assessment(s):

  1. Students are assessed through low-stakes in-class activities. These often consist of Poll Everywhere questions (multiple choice, short answer, true or false, etc). In other class sessions, these are a group activity followed by a share out of the group’s findings.
  2. Students are assessed through quizzes consisting of multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
  3. Students are assessed through the Masculinities in Magazines assignment, a team analytical paper in which they examine how a topic of their choice (e.g., fashion, fatherhood) is represented in men’s magazines through the lens of one of our course theories
