Learning Goals and Assessments

Learning Goal(s):

  1. Understanding of the Diversity of Human Societies. Students will develop an understanding that the social world consists of a range of diverse cultures that vary both across and within groups.
  2. Apply Information and Media Literacy and Critical Thinking Skills. Students will demonstrate the ability to summarize information, evaluate information and its source, and use information to respond critically to sociological questions.
  3. Analyze Structural Disadvantage. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the way in which social class, gender, and racial/ethnic groups in the US and globally are socially located in ways that create disadvantages that are built into the social system.

Goal Assessment(s):

  1. Students give the content of a verbal tweet to the class. Their sociological questions related to the news item ask others to think critically about: structural aspects of the issue, its causes, diverse perspectives, disparate effects, or collective solutions.
  2. The sociological questions in the verbal tweet prompt some to many student responses.
