This syllabus is designed for advanced graduate students preparing to write their MA thesis. It is organized according to the 8-week block structure of the program.

Learning Goals and Assessments

Learning Goal(s):

1. Define and compare various theoretical approaches to the study of gender
2. Apply theories of gender to real-world scenarios, current events, and an empirical topic of the student's choosing
3. Work collaboratively and independently to describeand apply theoretical approaches to gender

Goal Assessment(s):

1. Students will demonstrate their ability to define and compare theoretical approaches in weekly reading responses where they are asked to define gender and in the final paper in which they compare two approaches.
2. Students will be assessed on their ability to apply theories of gender through (1) presentations in which they select a current event, debate, or element of culture to apply theories and (2) the final paper where they select their own empirical topic.
3. Students will be assessed in their ability to work collaboratively through the group presentation assignment and draft peer review. Their ability to work independently will be assessed through the reading responses and final paper.
