Usage Notes

Although this course is offered online, in either a summer (2 month) or regular semester (4 month) format, this syllabus can easily accommodate a face-to-face format. Discussion board questions can be implemented in class discussion and the research paper/presentation can be modified to include student presentations to the class.

Learning Goals and Assessments

Learning Goal(s):

  1. Students will learn how to analyze social welfare policies and how social welfare services are delivered.
  2. Students will learn about critical issues that impact social welfare policy in the U.S., including social justice and civil rights, poverty and economic inequality, and governmental budgets and taxation.
  3. Students will learn about major social welfare policies and programs in the U.S.

Goal Assessment(s):

  1. Students will demonstrate competency on this goal by correctly answering questions on Exam 1. Students write a research paper centering around raising awareness about a social problem and how best to address it with a social welfare policy.
  2. Students will demonstrate competency on this goal by correctly answering questions on Exam 2. Students write a research paper centering around raising awareness about a social problem and how best to address it with a social welfare policy.
  3. Students will demonstrate competency on this goal by correctly answering questions on Exams 2 and 3.
