Abstract

This activity allows students studying the sociology of work or the labor force to engage with the question: How do licensing laws affect workers, and what industries are most heavily licensed? They will complete a reading, answer discussion questions, and then break into small groups to complete an activity on occupational licensure.

Designed for use in a 400-level Sociology of the Labor Force course, but with appropriate scaffolding of discussion questions could be used in any level course in a unit about work or occupations

Learning Goals and Assessments

Learning Goal(s):

  1. Students will be able to identify occupational licensure
  2. Students will be able to understand how jobs are differentially licensed in their state
  3. Students will be able to create their own ideal qualifications for licensing in occupations

Goal Assessment(s):

  1. Students’ identification of occupational licensure (and thus, completion of the readings) will be apparent in their responses to initial discussion questions
  2. Students’ understanding of how jobs are differentially licensed in their state will be assessed when groups turn in the Occupational Licensure Student Handout
  3. Students’ creation of their own ideal qualifications will be assessed when groups turn in the Occupational Licensure Student Handout
