Gender Portfolio Project

Abstract

This portfolio project asks students to choose a social institution and analyze how gender is shaped through that institution. Using visual material such as photos or ads, students create a scrap-book style portfolio that blends theories from class with visual analysis to show how gender is social reproduced. Portfolios are 50-60 pages long.

I have used this portfolio assignment as a final project in a gender class (and a version in a Women's Studies class as well). I pair this assignment with Lauren Greenfield's book, Girl Culture, which is a visual analysis of the role of media in the construction of femininity. Many students are quite successful and creative with their portfolios....

Learning Goals and Assessments

Learning Goal(s):

1. Students will be able to express an advanced understanding of the role of a social institution in the social reproduction of gender norms.
2. Students will be able to analyze visual material as it represents gender norms
3. Students will be able to apply theories from class to the analysis of the gendering process of a social institution

Goal Assessment(s):

1. Adequate definition and analysis of a social institution in the final portfolio.
2. Adequate analytical notes on each piece of visual material, as well as an adequate written introduction and conclusion.
3. Application of appropriate theories to the chosen topic, and ability to integrate theories into visual analysis.
