1. 1. Students should acquire general knowledge about the history of western conceptions of mental illness, the psychiatric profession and forms of psychiatric treatment.
2. Develop an understanding of how social/cultural context shapes conceptions of mental health and illness and the expression of human distress.
   
3. 3. Become familiar with the diagnostic and statistucal manual:its history, significance, how it shapes diagnostic practice, and the controversies surrounding it.
