Learning Goals and Assessments

Learning Goal(s):

  1. Students will develop a working knowledge of major classical and contemporary sociological theories.
  2. Students will be able to analyze, synthesize, apply, and critique sociological theories.
  3. Students will be able to express their understanding of sociological theory in writing, orally, and creatively.

Goal Assessment(s):

  1. Class participation, in-class activities, and three major assignments: group paper comparing, contrasting, and applying Marx and Weber’s theories; individual paper applying a contemporary theory to analyze a film; creative presentation of a theory.
  2. Class participation, in-class activities, and group paper comparing, contrasting, and applying Marx and Weber’s theories meet this goal; individual paper applying a contemporary theory to analyze a film meets the analyze, apply, and critique sub-goals.
  3. Class participation, in-class activities, & three major assignments (group compare &contrast paper, individual paper, creative project) meet the writing and oral expression goals; creative presentation & in-class activity meet creative expression goal.
