Instructors will need a copy of the DVD "Strength to Resist" and Michael Kimmel's "Guyland". The activity will take 2 class periods. Student should complete the assignment between the 1st and 2nd class period.

  1. Examine the influence of media as an agent of gender socialization and discuss the relationship between gender and media from a sociological perspective of their choosing.
  2. Identify differences in the gender socialization of young men and women.
  3. Appreciate the impact of gender socialization on their own lives

Goal Assessment(s):

  1. Students will answer questions that demonstrate an ability to articulate how media is an agent of socialization and how a sociological theory of their choosing would examine the relationship between gender and media.
  2. Students will discuss differences in gender socialization among young men and women in responses to specific questions, as well as in a written reflection in which they support their responses with evidence from the film and excerpt.
  3. Students will reflect on the impact of gender socialization in their own lives.
