Students will learn to appreciate that the individual troubles of Higher Education students, faculty members, and administrators can be viewed as social, political, and educational issues. The course is designed to meet the educational needs of many types of students. Firstly, it is designed for Sociology majors who wish to achieve a better understanding of US society through the sociological study of Higher Education. Secondly, it is designed for Elementary and Secondary Education students who wish to achieve a better understanding of the "high end" of the US education system (e.g., to become more knowledgeable advisors to future college students). Thirdly, this course is designed to provide a foundation for future study in Higher Education (e.g. M.A., or Ph.D. programs in Higher Education Administration or Student Affairs). Finally, this course is designed to enable students to reflect on their own experiences in Higher Education, and to re-assess their own educational plans (e.g., regarding graduate school) or those of their children.
