Foci include problems of desegregation and re-segregation, the linkages among educational and career aspirations and intergenerational mobility, the "crisis" in education, including poor student performance and teacher turnover, high stakes testing, policies of student retention-in-grade, and the interdependent issues of teacher burnout and student dropout behavior. Of related interest are the linkages among human and cultural capital and educational attainment and occupational returns on education, as well as the extent to which the school system can be held responsible for decreasing American competitiveness in the world markets. Throughout the course original research and local and national data will be presented and analyzed. Students will have the opportunity to become involved in a major study of urban school effectiveness. This study will assist urban districts in addressing the myriad policies, practices, and programs designed to assist schools in meeting the needs of student bodies whose demographic makeup is changing.
