When we sit down at the kitchen table or study desk to plan our lessons for the next day or go into a classroom to teach a lesson we operate in a social, political, economic and legal context which influences what we do as classroom teachers. Recognizing this the Standards Council of the Teaching Profession in its Guidelines for the Evaluation of Teacher Education Courses (December, 1998: 8) stated that teachers must "possess knowledge of current education, societal and school contextual issues that affect teacher's work and learners' aspirations".
