The time frame covered will be from the early 19th century to pre-WWII. The contributions of the "famous men" (Comte, Spencer, Durkheim, Marx, Simmel, Weber) will be examined as well as the works of those who have more recently been rightfully acknowledged as major contributors to discipline and theory (Martineau, Addams, Gilman, Du Bois, and others). Special attention will be given to each theorist’s personal biography, sociohistorical context, and intellectual indebtedness to other social thinkers. The final question to be addressed will be: what significance does the work of the discipline’s founders have for contemporary sociology and sociological theory? ER -
