Yes, selfish – for devoting my life to an esoteric quest and for spending large sums of tuition money to do so. At one point, a close relative said to me, "You should be home having children. And you could have bought a house for what you’ve spent on that degree." The reason I open with this example is not to complain about my relatives. Rather, I think it is a telling example of the very real prejudices which continue to face women professors and students. It is critical that we not only prompt our students to analyze and resist contemporary forms of sexism but also help them to understand the historical underpinnings of such deep-seated, pervasive biases.
