Despite the high level of upward mobility that we have in our society, it is largely a myth for the majority of Americans. We all know something about inequality; however, we have a limited understanding of the ways in which the United States social system continues to systematically disenfranchise racial, ethnic, and gender groups from mainstream society. To this end, the primary purpose of the course is to introduce students to some of the notable discourses regarding the continued and consistent patterns of institutionalized discrimination and to uncover the social consequences of structured inequality in the United States society.
