Following instructor set up of necessary skills, students complete the assignment provided. This assignment requires students to use a formula to calculate drug overdose death rates across two time periods and three neighboring states given information on prevalence and population. Students interpret the calculated death rates and compare rates across time and place, drawing conclusions from the empirical data. The assignment facilitates first-hand engagement with empirical data in order to demonstrate the difference between prevalence and rates. Through completing the assignment, students compare and contrast rates and prevalence and demonstrate their understanding of these epidemiological measures. In addition, the assignment asks students draw conclusions from the empirical data and interpret empirical data presented graphically. This assignment involves active learning, critical thinking, and development of quantitative literacy.</p> ER -
