In this in-class activity, students will begin to grapple with the underlying assumptions and plurality of meanings that are attached to “being a feminist.” Specifically, they will begin to think through important questions such as, Who is a feminist? What does that mean? How is the term often defined and applied in popular culture? What are the implications? How do students understand the term in relation to themselves? To help answer these questions, students will brainstorm lists of “feminist” celebrities in a think-pair-share format. Student responses will be written on the board to generate discussions about their choices. This activity is especially useful for the first week of class in a Sociology of Gender course to get students to begin talking to each other and implementing the skills that will be used throughout the semester (e.g., debating, collaborating, deconstructing, writing). The activity works well if students have already had some exposure to the concepts of feminism/feminist and gender/sex.</p> ER -
