In their efforts to make it to California, the teenagers—Elora, Bear, Cheese and Willie Jack—engage in delinquent behavior to earn money for their trip. The series explores the group’s interactions with a rival group, loss of a loved one, and life on an indigenous reservation. “Reservation Dogs” is the first American show created, written, and directed by indigenous artists.

This assignment aims to make criminological theories applicable to an individual-level understanding. By seeing how deviance takes place in a TV show or micro-level, students are better able to analyze these theories covered in introductory criminology classes. Beyond analyzing theory, this assignment also asks students to analyze the inequalities shaping the indigenous teenagers’ experience in the show. The social and situational context of crime is important to a broader, more nuanced, understanding of criminology itself.
ER -
