We will be exploring the politics of conquest and immigration that have shaped the growth of these Latino populations, and the construction of a "panethnic" Latino/Hispanic identity category, as well as, current debates surrounding immigration and the future of race/ethnicity in the U.S. Topics discussed include: comparative histories, civil rights movements, political organizations, identity and racial/ethnic labeling, immigration, language, work, family, gender, feminism, sexuality, media studies, and artistic expression. Class lectures, discussions, and assignments are geared towards helping students develop a critical understanding of the primary issues related to the experiences of Latinos/as in the U.S. ER -
