Operationalization is a critical process in the initial stage of scientific inquiry to empirically define variables, so they can be measured properly. This assignment is designed to help students in a research methodology course: 1) be familiar with the concept of operationalization with simple examples; 2) practice formulating a simple bivariate hypothesis using common sociological variables; and 3) learn to assess the consistency between logical speculations and empirically testable hypotheses in typical research scenarios.
