Sociology of the Body can be a challenging course to teach because of the intimacy of the subject matter and the body issues students bring to this class. The goal of this volume is to provide more information about teaching this course and to provide various frameworks for understanding and studying the body. Our hope is that this volume is the first of many editions and that its content will create more dialogue and teaching strategies. Some of the syllabi are more general overviews of the sociology of the body, while many others focus on specific aspects of bodies or utilize a specific perspective to understand the body. For example, some syllabi examine women’s bodies only or they utilize the lens of feminism to understand how bodies are gendered. Other syllabi examine bodies in the context of health and medicine or in the context of crime and social control. A few syllabi are even more specific than these in that they look at a particular aspect of bodies such as body size and weight or beauty ideals and culture. All of the syllabi presented here provide intriguing approaches and resources for the study of the body. Many of the syllabi also contain assignments and suggestions for audio-visual resources. ER -
