In general, since gender roles and norms are so normalized in our lives and are thought of as natural, they are largely invisible. Thus, the journal assists students in becoming more aware of how gendered expectations affect them each day. In my course, I also asked students to think about sexuality within their journals. Observations can be about gendered interactions, gender in specific institutions, gendered humor in media, etc. Additionally, once a week the students were asked to make a journal entry in which they reflect on their observations, and connect them to course material.
