There is a long-standing debate in the field of sociology over exactly how to define an "applied sociology." For some, it involves research activities, for others working with clients, and for still others, a more amorphous "betterment" of people and social structures. While this definitional process will undoubtedly continue in the profession, those of us confronted with the challenge of designing an educational curriculum have to give some concrete and coherent substance to what constitutes an "applied sociology." I will speak to this issue from my experience in helping to design an undergraduate curriculum. While the issues and choices will be somewhat different with a graduate program, there would also be some parallels. ER -
