Format:This course combines lectures, in-class discussions of readings, photograph and video viweing, student presentations and short writing assignments. Readings and course assignments are drawn from visual anthropology, visual sociology, documentary film-making, documentary photography, and educational research. Students will review existing video and film documents and construct documents of their own. The class will critically examine the implications of these documents and course readings for conducting social research and constructing social theory. Field Assignments: Students are expected to complete 3 of the following 4 short field assignments. All students complete assignmetn #1. All students then complete two of the reamining three assignments. These assignments present intruiging intellectual challenges, btut they are all thecnically simple ( You should take no more than 2-3 hours of out of class time to complete each one). Each assignment must be completed by the due date specified on the syllabus. We will examine closely the intellectual challegnes embedded in these assignments by looking at the different approaches tudentst ake to them and the assumptions required to produce or view visual documents of this sort.
