In recent years, thenumber of doctoral students teaching their own courses has risen considerably. Between 1993 and 1998, 40% of higher education institutions lowered their number of full-time faculty with just over half of them opting to replace them with supplementary faculty, which includes parttime, adjunct, and graduate student teachers (ASA 2004). A report by the Coalition of Graduate Employee Unions finds that graduate students comprise 18% of all university teachers (2000). In a study conducted at Yale University, undergraduates were found to be two times more likely to be taught by a graduate student or adjunct professor than a tenured faculty member (1999). According to the American Sociological Association Survey of Baccalaureate and Graduate Programs in Sociology, 2000-2001, graduate students totaled 8.1% of faculty in departments across the U.S. and approximately 22% of all supplementary faculty members.
