We begin with an examination ofthe structural context of teaching sociology. Readings for the first week examine the changing nature of American higher education and the meaning of changes in higher education for teaching. We will also touch on the political economy of higher education, and the impact of college student cultures on the teaching process. In addition, we will consider the unique and sometimes conflicting demands on college and university faculty, including the relationship between teaching and research. The second and third weeks are devoted to the issue of planning and organizing a course. Week five considers three teaching-related issues. Readings and discussions for this week will consider the issue of ethics in teaching, handling large classes, and the teaching assistant role. Week six is devoted to an examination of active learning, and teaching specific sociological topics. Week seven considers the related issues of diversity and multiculturalism. Readings examine race, ethnicity, and gender in the classroom, as well as multiculturalism. Week eight is19 devoted to the broad issue of dealing with students. In week nine we turn to the topic of evaluation. In week ten, we examine the issue of teaching with technology, and distanceeducation. During week eleven, a group of faculty and teaching assistants are scheduled to talk about the nature of teaching. Week twelve will be devoted to project presentations. ER -
