In it, we will examine key theoretical and empirical issues in licit and illicit drug use, alcohol misuse, and the criminal justice system. Course objectives are: to highlight the association between alcohol, drug use, and crime in America; to provide an overview of the interdisciplinary social and behavioral approaches to drug studies; to distinguish legal and policy issues as related to substance use and crime; to examine the etiology and epidemiology of substance use and criminality from competing paradigms; to compare and contrast criminal justice and public health models in prevention, treatment, and societal wellness; to locate alcohol, drugs, and crime in historical, sociocultural, and synergistic context; and to recognize and pursue research links between your own specialty areas and the study of drugs. Specific topics to be covered include: The Drugs-Crime Connection; Drug Distribution: Individual and Organizational Levels; The Drug War and Harm Reduction; The Criminal Justice Response; The Treatment Response; Needle Exchange; Women and Drugs; Kids and Drugs; Drugs, Sex, and AIDS; Marijuana; Cocaine and Crack; Heroin; and Alcohol. A basic understanding of major sociological and criminological theories would be helpful for this course. Assignments will include a substantial reading list, one or more oral presentations, and weekly writing assignments. ER -
