In order to fully understand the issues surrounding alcohol use and alcohol problems, this course will be multidisciplinary, although the primary focus will be sociological. Students will learn about the physical, psychological, and social effects of alcohol use on individuals, families, and society. The course will cover: 1) patterns of alcohol use throughout history, 2) age, gender, and ethnic differentiation in drinking patterns and problems, 3) physiological, psychological, and sociological explanations for the causes of alcoholism and problem drinking, 4) social problems related to alcohol use, and 5) prevention and treatment of alcohol problems.
