First, as its title indicates, it exposes the student to classical sociological theories. Second, because we are Humanist sociologists, the course looks at the founders of sociology from an evaluate approach in order to show the student that there is a viable alternative to the traditional objective, positivistic approach to sociology. Third, because non-traditional classical sociologists are often ignored, the course introduces the student to the works of Harriet Martineau, Jane Addams and W.E.B DuBois (to mention three of the most important overlooked early sociologists) who were squarely in the tradition of Humanist sociology, and who advocated what we call "the promise of sociology," -- the Enlightenment view that fused science and morals into a social science with a moral imperative to liberate humankind from ignorance and oppression.
