In particular, students are asked to examine how the wedding industry portrays brides and grooms as hyper-heterogendered beings; that is, brides are depicted as conforming to a very traditional standard of femininity and the wedding industry uses illusions of gender difference to construct weddings as a woman’s "big day." Students are encouraged to use intersectional analysis in order to see how weddings, couples, and brides are socially constructed by the industry and the meanings these constructions have for gender within couple relationships and heterosexuality.
