We here examine processes of post-World War II economic and political transformation in three regions of the non-Western world: East Asia, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Particular attention will be paid to how the rise of a computer-based "informational" economy in the "Western core" of the world system have interacted with regional processes of social change to accelerate international economic and political interdependency. In this way, we build a foundation for understanding the turn away from an exclusively national development strategy in favor of the globalization project on the part of political elites, intellectuals, and international economic and political organizations around the world since the mid-1980s. We will finish with an overview of two problems facing the globalization project today: the specter of international financial crises like the one which began in Thailand in 1997 and spread throughout Asia and on to Russia and Latin America in 1998; and the mounting ecological dilemmas confronting the human species at the dawn of the new millennium.
