The first is to introduce students to some of the problems, experiences, and agency of women in countries often referred to as, the "Third World." These countries are located, primarily, in the southern hemisphere and most are poor. We will focus on social problems women face; on differences and commonalities among women in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia; issues of identity (as mothers, women, citizens, workers); and organizing for change (economic, political, cultural, legal), including transnational organizing. The second important objective is to develop the capacity for critical thinking when doing cross cultural analysis. Students will learn and apply feminist conceptual tools to assess a) the representation of women and issues by women themselves and by others and b) the student's own interpretations of and reactions to readings, films and class discussion. That is, students will be asked to turn the analytical lens on themselves and their own cultures to understand their interpretations and reactions to writings by/about Third World women. ER -
