Although definitions vary, professionals have used this label to suggest that children exposed to factors such as poverty, disability, violence, drug abuse, and teen parenting have a higher probability, than other children, of poor developmental outcomes. However, some have suggested that the at-risk label can disadvantage children by lowering expectations for their success. Students in this course will come to understand the meaning of this label in society today. They will also understand the effects of various "risk factors" on children's development and the reasons why these factors exist in our society. Finally, they will explore the implications of this understanding for social policy and programs. ER -
