Most of these syllabi were developed by sociologists; however, some were designed by faculty outside of sociology. All heavily emphasize sociological themes, issues, and perspectives. As work-family courses broach a wide variety of topics, those who teach work-family courses face a tall challenge in developing a course that contains exercises and discussions that effectively convey the connections between work, family, and community practices/cultures. In response, this volume includes numerous creative exercises and activities. The inclusion of these techniques can be an effective forum in helping sociology students to gain an understanding of the historical, demographic, and economic forces which have propelled work-family issues to the forefront, analyze the antecedents and outcomes of work-life experiences for different stakeholder groups, evaluate the workplace, and government policy initiatives aimed at helping individuals manage work and family roles, and compare the United States’ response to work-family needs with those in other countries. Work family scholarship blends well with electronic discussion formats and other collaborative learning environments structured to facilitate the development of students’ critical thinking capabilities. These formats are explored here as well. ER -
