The first section considers some of the practical and theoretical issues that arise in an analysis of the relation of education and national development. The second section focuses on education and national development in six influential national systems of education that pioneered in modern education: France, Germany, the U.K., the U.S.A., Japan and the former U.S.S.R. Similarities and differences in the structure and practice of education in these societies will be reviewed. Particular attention will be paid to the ideal (theoretical) structures, and the gap between theory and practice. Contemporary movements to reform these systems will also be surveyed. The third section will review the experience of two or more newly industrialized nations. Likely choices are Singapore, India, South Africa, or Brazil. The final section will provide a quick overview of some of the trends in education and national development in the third world }, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Cummings, William}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
