The course begins by examining theoretical work in law and society and the sociology of organizations related to the topic. The course then provides in depth examination of three areas of recent educational policy directly related to court intervention: school desegregation; inequality in educational resources; and expansion of student rights. These case studies will be used to identify how the effects of legal interventions on schooling are mediated by social actors and school organizational cultures, producing at times unintended and unanticipated consequences. The course closes with a survey of other significant issues related to the topic.}, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Arum, Richard}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
