In other words, what is social psychology, what do social psychologists study, and how is social psychology related to other social sciences, such as sociology and psychology? After we have defined social psychology, we will spend the remainder of the course covering many of the central questions and topics that have been the focus of social psychological research. We will, for example, discuss the process through which human beings learn how to act like human beings (socialization) and how we develop a sense of self and identity (self-concept and identity formation). We will also discuss research that attempts to explain interpersonal attraction (why people fall in love) and altruistic behavior (when are people willing to help one another and when are they unlikely to offer help). These are only a few of the many topics we will cover in this course.}, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Desmond, Scott}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
