All agree, however, that we are living in an ever-expanding globalized world with increasing interconnections between all members of the human population. This new age of modern globalization is at once exciting in its promise and possibility while simultaneously frightening in many of its current outcomes. This course looks to explore some of the many social problems that exist in our current form of globalization. We will examine macro level issues such as war and poverty, as well as some of the social outcomes of these such as hunger, child and sweatshop labor, AIDS, and refugees. We will also take a close look at the macro-governing and lending organizations such as the WTO and IMF/World Bank as well as trade agreements such as the FTAA in order to better explore how policy is created and the effect of these policies on people around the globe. Importantly, we will pay special attention to the role of the modern multinational corporation and the increasing complexities of militarism, imperialism, and neo-colonialism. Finally, we will utilize our collective knowledge and experience to move toward thinking about solutions for the many social problems we will be exploring. Overall, this course aims to provide an overview and initial exploration of a variety of issues related to globalization. As such, our class will act as a sort of "Global Social Problems" course whereby we engage in thoughtful discussion and debate regarding these extremely important issues. }, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={White, Jonathan}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
