This course covers perspectives from early theorists, including Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber, as well as classical and contemporary theories. A primary goal of the course is to help students understand theory in both historical and contemporary contexts and be prepared to utilize theory in sociological research. In order to achieve this, students take active roles in discussion as facilitators and participants during 10 class meetings throughout this semester. Discussion days rely on student reading and analysis of current events through a collection of news articles from a variety of news outlets (i.e., The New York Times, Washington Post, etc.). These articles serve as the basis for which theoretical perspectives and concepts can be applied to contemporary phenomena allowing students to appreciate the continued relevance of sociological theories.}, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Anderson, Erin}, year={2020}, month={Jun.} }
