With specific focus on the United States, throughout this course we will examine homicide offenders and victims, the criminalization of killing, the social and legal landscape of how homicide and murder are defined, social responses, theories of homicide, social ecology, punishments for murder, homicide data, media coverage of homicide, state-sponsored killing, and specific types of homicide. Students will gain theoretical knowledge and experience applying theoretical knowledge to the study of homicide. They will also gain experience using quality data sources, and gain and understanding of how to study specific types of killing from a sociological perspective.
