@article{Mekolichick_2014, place={Washington DC: American Sociological Association.}, title={Elevator Speech "Ambush" Assignment}, url={https://trails.asanet.org/article/view/elevator-speech-ambush-assignment}, abstractNote={As most of our students transition from their undergraduate experiences into careers, it is necessary for faculty to appropriately prepare them to make this transition. Guiding students on how to think about the knowledge and skills learned in their sociological training and how this knowledge and skills engage with the marketplace is key to assisting in this transition—either to a career or to graduate school. One valuable experience that can assist in making this transition is for students to develop an elevator speech to use in networking situations. An added value of developing an elevator speech is that it is scalable. Examples can be added in and topics can be elaborated upon for a social setting or an interview; the elevator speech provides the structural foundation for a variety of social interactions. This exercise and corresponding PowerPoint and readings leads faculty and students through the development and delivery of an elevator speech. }, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Mekolichick, Jeanne}, year={2014}, month={Jul.} }
