This departs from a traditional approach to assessment where students recall or apply information in a more standardized form. Authentic assessment allows students the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of the course content while also encouraging reflective thinking. Student learning portfolios are an example of authentic assessment. In this assignment, students become more critical and reflective thinkers by providing evidence of their own learning. This assignment also encourages students to take responsibility for their learning through critical reflection of their progress in the course and how they determine if they are effective learners. }, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Hunt, Andrea}, year={2014}, month={Apr.} }
