Unlike those professional fields, such as medicine, counseling, and social work that have found ways to institutionalize the training of students for practice, sociology is still struggling with the preparation of applied sociologists. This struggle is rooted in ambivalence within the discipline of sociology about the role of applied work, a lack of consensus on appropriate terminology for talking about applied sociology, and the relative newness of education in applied sociology. These factors combine with the practical, ethical, and political problems of placing students in community-based practice settings to pose significant challenges to those who teach applied sociology. It is our hope that this collection of essays will prove a useful resource for meeting those challenges.}, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Peterson, James and Van Valey, Thomas and Dukes, Duane}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
