How can we move students up the scaffolding if there is an impediment blocking the way? The first part of this article outlines some impediments to learning that come straight from the students in our sample. By understanding these barriers to student learning, we can take them into account as we plan and teach our classes. The second part gives a few examples of ways to avoid and repair broken rungs. From 2004 to 2006, Kathy Feltey (University of Akron) and Jeanne Ballantine (Wright State University) collected surveys from over 1,000 students in randomly selected classes in Sociology, African American Studies, and Finance. Some demographic highlights from the sample are included in the Appendix A.}, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Ballantine, Jeanne and Felty, Kathy}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
