The impact of alcohol and drug abuse at the social and individual levels is the focus of the set. However, the scope of what’s covered is expansive. The theoretical, social, and research issues currently used to explore the etiology, treatment, prevention, and the development of social policies for alcohol and drug problems in contemporary society are highlighted. In addition, historical analysis of substance use invites students to look at the numerous dynamics which work to define the legality status of particular drugs. In particular, we will utilize the theoretical perspectives of labeling and moral panics to show how certain racial/ethnic, class, and immigrant groups were targeted by powerful whistle blowers as a mechanism to create anti-drug hysteria and hence legislation. Students move beyond the U.S. borders to explore drug trafficking and global politics. After highlighting large macro dynamics, the set also offers instructors plentiful material with respect to individual users and the popular perspectives on the causes of substance use. }, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Curtis, Russell}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
