That is people follow a complex set of shared rules about acting masculine or feminine in different social settings. Whether at home, school, work, or any public space for that matter, people do or perform gender. But just what does it mean to perform ‘femininity’ or what behaviours do we associate with acting ‘masculine’? In this assignment, you will be going out into the field and observing the various ways that individuals perform gender in public spaces. This will enable you to pinpoint qualities and behaviours that are constructed as masculine and those that are constructed as feminine. }, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Blakely, Kristin}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
