The New York State Assembly has a webpage of all family bills which are either up for a vote or have recently been passed (http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/). I assign one or two bills to each group. We use these bills to discuss whether the bills favor the ‘traditional nuclear family’ (most bills refer to the rights of extended family members, grandparents, stepparents, etc.) or changing families. Students often have strong opinions about whether these laws should be legalized and quickly change their mind once court cases that have brought the bill to the forefront are discussed. }, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Smith, Tamara}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
