@article{Martin_2010, place={Washington DC: American Sociological Association.}, title={Gender & Violence}, url={https://trails.asanet.org/article/view/gender-violence}, abstractNote={This seminar explores the intersections of gender and violence. We shall analyze dynamics among men/boys, among women/girls, and between men/boys and women/girls and situate them within the context of U. S. society and culture. Our aim is to understand their origins, forms and effects and to identify changes that can be made to reduce and prevent their occurrence. We address the meanings and nature of interpersonal violence, the effects of being the recipient of violence, the effects of perpetrating violence, the intersections of race/ethnicity and sexuality/sexual orientation with violence and society’s responses to various forms of violence. The role of gender in promoting and preventing violence is explored at three levels: individual, interpersonal, and macro (or structural, cultural, societal). The role of the entertainment industry and media in representing and perpetrating gendered constructions of violence is considered. Legal remedies (state & federal laws, law enforcement), education/public service campaigns, social movements (e.g., aimed at preventing or stopping violence such as the anti-rape movement), and other responses, remedies & prevention efforts are explored. Emotional threat, intimidation, fear, selling women silicone breast implants (that are known to be risky), and the concept of "violation" are considered. }, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={Martin, P.}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
