This kind of dual-powered thinking is exemplified in the remarkably inventive essay below. Too many of our students appear quietly convinced the status quo is insurmountable, especially where dystopian matters like crime and ill health are concerned. Sociologist William Du Bois challenges us to share with them a wholly different approach to these social ills, one based on "provention" (explained later). His novel prescription actually passes the "bottom line" test - and seems far more economical in dollar-and-sense terms than the status quo. Best of all, his approach can be adapted by us to scores of social problems we must resolve along the way if we are ever to earn lives lived happily in an admirable "utopia."}, journal={TRAILS: Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology}, author={DUBOIS, WILLIAM}, year={2010}, month={Apr.} }
